Emergency response tents: types, specifications and how to choose

The right shelter.

At the scene, you deploy — you don't evaluate. There's no time to test kit when the call is live, so the shelter has to be the right one before it leaves the store. This guide is the part that happens earlier: choosing a tent that goes up in minutes, holds in weather, carries the right paperwork, and does it on the hundredth call-out as cleanly as the first.

What counts as an emergency response tent

A rapid-deployable shelter built for repeated operational use by the emergency services and resilience teams — not a one-season event canopy. The job dictates the rest: a welfare point for crews, a command base, a triage space, a rest centre for displaced people. Each needs a different setup, but they share four non-negotiables: up fast, holds in weather, certified for the people under it, and built to be struck, transported and pitched again. There's no single best shelter, only the right one for the role. The two formats Temporium supplies — both fully modular:

The workhorse

Folding-frame shelters

Strong points: Up in minutes with one or two people and no power. Utterly predictable, linkable into a complex, and repairable part-by-part — a worn joint or torn panel is replaced, not the whole unit.

Plan for: The larger frames want two trained people and pack down larger than an air tent. This is the LP Tent range (Alu45 through to the venue-grade GP), rated in mph and supplied with the structural and fire paperwork.

Fastest off the truck

Inflatable (air) shelters

Strong points: A welded air-beam structure that self-erects as it inflates — one person and a blower, standing in a couple of minutes, packed to the smallest footprint. We supply inflatable domes and a 4m × 6m air shelter, and run the blowers off our own Instagrid battery units, so the whole setup is mains-independent.

Plan for: The honest caveat is the failure mode — a major puncture behaves differently to a frame — which is why the welded multi-chamber construction and a repair kit earn their place.

The short version: want it standing in a couple of minutes, one person, the smallest pack size → inflatable (run off an Instagrid). Want zero power dependency and part-by-part repairability → frame. Both link and divide the same way, and most fleets carry both, matched to the role.

Modular by default — connect, expand, divide

Every Temporium shelter, frame and inflatable alike, is modular: connect units into a continuous run for a rest centre or field-hospital footprint, expand a setup as the incident grows, and divide a single structure into zones — clean triage and treatment, command and briefing, welfare and store — without pitching separate tents. That's what lets one deployment flex to the incident in front of you, instead of arriving as a fixed kit list.

What to check

The specifications that actually decide it

Ignore the marketing adjectives; these are the lines a procurement review checks.

Wind rating, in mph — to BS EN 13782

The structural-and-wind design standard for temporary tents. A serious supplier states the maximum gust speed the structure is rated to and the anchoring assumptions behind it. "Sturdy" is not a rating; "rated to 60mph, ballasted per the layout" is.

Fire classification — to BS EN 13501-1

The reaction-to-fire class of the fabric. For any structure the public stands under this is a licensing matter, and the certificate should be supplied for the exact model and fabric.

Footprint and internal height

Working height for stretchers, equipment or standing crews; the footprint that fits the cordon.

Climate-readiness

Whether it takes heating, cooling, lighting and lining — a shelter is only usable for hours if it holds temperature.

Blackout and privacy

Triage, welfare and command often need to not be seen into.

Pack size, weight and deploy crew

What fits the vehicle, and how many trained people it takes.

Speed, and repeatability

Up in minutes — and the same way every time

Speed matters, but repeatability matters more. The shelter should pitch the same way on the five-hundredth deployment as the first: joints that lock positively, an inflation sequence that doesn't vary, a drill a crew trains once and then trusts while their attention is on the incident. Kit that "mostly" goes up is kit that fails on the cold, wet, 3am call-out. Ask any supplier how the structure behaves at deployment 200, not deployment 1.

Procurement-ready

The documentation a Category 1 or 2 buyer needs

Procurement under the Civil Contingencies Act framework runs on evidence. The pack should be available at any stage, before any commitment, and matched to the exact specification quoted:

  • Structural and wind-load documentation (EN 13782) with the anchoring assumptions
  • Fire classification certificate (EN 13501-1)
  • Technical sheets, care and maintenance guidance
  • CE / UKCA declarations where they apply
  • Supplier standing — insurance (public and products liability), Companies House and VAT details

How fast can an emergency response tent be deployed?

What wind rating does an emergency shelter need?

It depends on exposure and anchoring, but the structure should be rated in mph to BS EN 13782, with the anchoring assumptions stated (ballast or stakes). The heavier frames carry higher ratings; the supplier should give you the number for the exact model.

Are emergency response tents fire-rated for public use?

The fabric should carry a reaction-to-fire classification to BS EN 13501-1, with the certificate supplied for the exact model. For any structure the public shelters under, that classification is a licensing requirement.
